Any good home security system is about layers and risk assessment.
Do a risk assessment to your whole residence to
determine what wireless technologies you can apply to add stronger layers around the areas with the most risk.
Assesment Example 1: Exterior Trash Cans

You may have a gate between your trash cans and your yard access. That equals one layer of security in the fact you have a gate between your cans and yard access.
The risk is that they can collect massive amounts of personal and financial information to steal your
identity and defraud you. That is a risk level of 8.
In the hacker world, profiling a target by using their trash is called skipping.
Solution:
> add a lock to the gate [1]
> put a wireless camera that covers the gate and access area [1]
> shred your mail [1]

Let me start by clearing up two points:
1. I am a huge fan of the second amendment
2. This not the venue to chirp off about gun rights. Chances are, your neighbor has one, or enough to share with the whole block.
Moving on...
Most people are completely stupid about the way they store and maintain their
firearms. If you are sitting in your living room and your shotgun is in the attic, it won't do you much
good for a home invasion. The real risk is that many many people die from accidental discharge of
a loaded firearm and they thought is was hiden.
Obviously, getting a gun safe is the responsible thing to do and will up your layer strength to 10 since there is no better way to secure your firearm.
